2015 Halloween Horror TV Schedule with Notes

The craft stores know something you don’t know. That’s right. It’s time for the 2015 Halloween Season TV Preview! This is where we let you know about the time and channel for everything we can find on TV having to do with Halloween or Horror for the month of October and sometimes late September. This will include holiday specials, horror movies, TV show premier dates and Halloween episodes of your favorite series as well as documentaries that might be considered scary. Anything and everything that might get your ghost good.

This year, as with every year, Turner Classic Movies nails it, but if you happen to have Showtime and all the channels that come with that package, you’ll be happy to know those guys are pulling out all the stops too. It’s a bit repetitive with some real gems in there.

A quick note: We are not going to be able to get it all. So many different markets and channels and providers… it’s impossible for me to compile a full list, but we will update it throughout the entire season. That means you can check back for updates and when we update this article we’ll post it on Facebook and Tweet it out to you. Make sure to follow us in the best way for you. Also note, schedules change. We work in Eastern Stand Time unless otherwise noted. Occasionally schedule are listed in terms of broadcast day instead of 24 hour day. We will try to make a note of this so you can set your DVR’s. If we find out that something changes, we’ll change it on this article. Let us know when you have updates or find something we should add. This is a community effort for the community.

abc_channel_vector_psd_by_m_davoodi-d58slztI don’t know why I even check in with ABC (not to be confused with ABC Family with their spectacular family viewing just below). These guys don’t really have much in the way of dark fantasy programming during the month of October. Last year they did screen Pixar’s Toy Story of Terror which is sure to become a Halloween classic and they do have the prestigious honor of hosting It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. They’re programming guide is only updated through mid-September. Obviously they don’t understand how important our DVR programming is to be done as soooooon as possible (lest we forget) and obsessive compulsive need to know all the horror fit to view (before we can view… we are psychic).

ABC-Family-13-nights-of-Halloween-thumb-380xauto-908613 Nights of Horror were never so family friendly as when ABC Family puts it together. This channel focuses on neo-Horror, pseudo-Horror and dark fantasy featuring your favorite wizards and witches.  This one kicks of October 19th (that’s a Monday) and goes through the end of the month.  Things you’ll want to note. Where as we mentioned that Toy Story of Terror was featured on ABC and premiered last year, this year you can find it toward the end of October on ABC Family. Also, this station loves to repeat viewings for maximum exposure. Oh, and they friggin’ LOVE Hocus Pocus which is great because I think it’s hot. So what’s screaming… uh… screening on night one through thirteen? Here you go:

the-walking-dead-season-6-walkers-658px-4The obvious is that the new season of The Walking Dead will premier October 11th at 9/8c. You cannot avoid it. Fear of the Walking Dead, the six episode spin off will be over by that time and you can enjoy the familiar faces and the cliffhanger story lines.

Beyond that AMC will have their annual Fear Fest. This is full of major release favorites that will be cut to ribbons of all the good bits you like, but at least when you flick through the channels late at night you might stumble upon a favorite Horror movie… then once you realize the kills are cut out, you’ll change the channel. That being said, it’s a great way to get young horror fans who might not be ready for the R rated stuff into some of our favorite movies. October 18th starts the Fest. Programming should be up soon though as of posting no schedule was available.

chiller-tvEveryone who watches Chiller TV remember Monsters HD and cries. That was the REAL Horror channel. Chiller TV does just fine, mixing original programming and movies with fan favorites. These movies will be edited to the genitals, but they’ll be available. The full schedule for October as well as programming announcements are still in the vaults. You can always find something on Chiller to watch. They’ve been running Wes Craven related programming this September due to the death of a Horror master. Let’s see if that continues through October. Updates will come soon.

1636367_originalDisney always plays their Monstober programming close to the hip, not revealing much of it at all until the last possible second. They feature original Disney series as well as dark fantasy related Disney fare. It’s perfect for the little ones. We will update this entry when the schedule becomes available, but I strongly recommend we put a petition together to have them re-air the Disney Halloween Treat special from the 80’s. Truly creepy stuff and the damn VHS tape (the only format on which it is available save for YouTube) fetches a pretty penny.

logo-2The new guy in town is quickly becoming the go-to network for Horror fans. Why? They show amazing shit. They show things like City of the Living Dead and Kung Fu marathons and Kaiju features and they have great contests involving creature features. I dare say this is the new Monsters HD… strike that… I dare say that it is BETTER than Monsters HD. What does El Rey have planned for Halloween and October? We don’t know just yet, but we do know that it will be horrific, it will feature uncut goodies and most likely they will feature their original series From Dusk Til Dawn.

As a side note, I have struggled NOT having the El Rey network for long enough and have purchased a Roku in order to enjoy this channel. That’s how psyched I am. I’m willing to buy a goddamn $90 piece of plastic that allows me to tap into the cordless revolution and then pay $20 a month to get it. Programming coming soon!

Encore Suspense puts on a rather impressive lineup during the month of October and they also are one of the only channels to give you a handy at-a-glance style presentation of their offering for the month. Here’s the link to the PDF that includes all of their October fare. Plenty of uncut Halloween Horror for your enjoyment if you get the channel.

epix-300x127Last year we were tipped off to some truly badass programming on the Epix channels. These guys don’t mess around with one of their networks being a “Drive-In” network. Their year round programming includes things like Death Rides a Horse and Fido. There’s obscure gems, some big names and some HD classics. We will keep you posted on their scheduling for October. They only have up through September available now.

Preview their schedule here: http://www.epixhd.com/channel/schedule/#epixdi

11747050Fox holds the distinction of televising one of my oldest Halloween traditional viewings in the Treehouse of Horrors episode of The Simpsons. We don’t have much yet, but when Fox starts to promote, we’ll get images, previews and maybe even a glimpse at the new couch gag before it is released. The date has not been announced yet. This will be the 26th Treehouse of Horrors.

Secret: One of the segments will feature Homer as Homerzilla! Kaiju lives!

simpsons_0FX and FXX are somewhat Horror friendly during October. There are two programs that real help them standout. FX’s original series American Horror Story is a fan favorite that takes on a new theme each year featuring homages to older Horror movies while incorporating a stellar cast to play some creepy individuals. This year the theme is Hotel. While last year’s Freakshow had all the trappings of a great Horror circus, I’m afraid I become disinterested early on. I look forward to see what will be put forth in Hotel. One of the highlights this season is an appearance by Lady Gaga. As a fan of the Ga, I couldn’t be happier. American Horror Story premieres Oct 7th and will run regularly through the month of October.

The second big to do over at the FX networks or rather the FXX network is that they run The Simpsons all the time… constantly… with few breaks. I love and watch this show religiously each night before beginning my nightly reviews, but something special happens as Halloween nears. FXX focuses on the more horrific episodes especially featuring the Treehouse of Horrors annual anthology horror shows. It’s a treat to be sure. We’ll let you know when they announce their plans for a marathon, but guaranteed it will at least be on Halloween day (and isn’t that what truly matters).

The FX Networks will definitely feature other Horror programming through October but they have not been known for any marathons of movies or special, named promotions.

downloadHere’s another network that a reader tipped us off to last year. Get TV showed a nice assortment of older Horror programming last year. I have never watched this network and currently their schedule only goes up through September 30th. Stay tuned for more info once it is announced.

halloween-movies-on-tv-logohttp://www.halloweenmoviesontv.com/ is a great resource where you might locate specific movies or access schedules as well. I’ve used them on a couple entries in this post although mostly just went to the network website. I love what they’re doing. They have a “days to Halloween countdown”, and I like their format. They even have links to previous years schedules so you can see how Halloween is gradually being eradicated from our programming by reality television (half truth only). No, I don’t care if you use their awesome site instead of this one. I only post this to be helpful anyway and it’s fun and pretty much we’re all IN THIS TOGETHER!!!  Also make sure to “like” their FaceBook page HERE. They have some very fun pics up of animated features from my youth. They do a damn good job.

hqdefault-1-300x223HBO doesn’t offer any official Halloween programming as is the case with most of the premium channels, but typically they have one station devoted to dark fantasy movies. It’s sporadic at best. Unfocused viewing for Horror fans and difficult to navigate. Luckily that’s why we’re here. To help you find your way to the info you need to plan your October.

Here’s the link to the October 1st schedule that offer a gateway to programming up until about midway through October: http://www.hbo.com/schedule?date=2015-10-01 We will pull out some choice nuggets for you to enjoy, but don’t expect a true horrorthon. If you consider The Leftovers dark fantasy and want to be depressed all October, you can watch that… and cry.

It’s important to note that HBO has multiple channels. We are listing the East coast channels and will put the name of the specific variant.

ifc-midnight_20110713231529-300x112While IFC hasn’t put up their schedule yet for October, it’s important to note that this channel thrives on regular Horror screenings inbetween some of their original TV series and endless Kill Bill 1 and 2 loops. IFC even has a physical media distro subset called IFC Midnight. They’ll have something good planned for the end of October and plenty of Horror throughout the month. Some of it won’t feel very “indie” but I assure you it is… in some fashion.

large_logoI’ve only become familiar with MOVIES! in the last year having enjoyed some classic films in the late night hours between feedings with my baby girl. It’s too early to get a full schedule for this channel, but they primarily focus on older fare. You won’t get a themed month, but hopefully we can count on a few choice gems to pop up.

images (1)At this point in time, it’s safe to say that NBC is not your go-to Halloween station. We’ll let you know if we see any goodies pop up, but there doesn’t appear to be a scary thing about this network.

showtime-300x135The Showtime cavalcade of channels is tremendous. I can tell you for a fact that I run into more creepy flicks on the Showtime family of channels (maybe Encore has a similar flavor). Throughout the month you are guaranteed to find something on Sho Beyond and Sho Beyond HD, but we’ll run it all down for you.  We’ll also post the link to the schedule for ease of sorting. Showtime does not do a themed month.

sundanceSundance Channel doesn’t do any specific horror themed programming but that doesn’t meant they don’t show the occasional scary movie. It’s a bit early to check in on Sundance to see what they’ll be giving us in October. Here’s the link to the schedule.

*Note that I’ve experienced difficulty using their schedule site. We may not be able to update this channel this year if this goes unchanged.

253048423_640SyFy Channel has original TV shows, classic TV, original movies (lots of big CG monsters) and plenty of old favorite Horror classics during the month of October. They typically offer the 31 Days of Halloween programming though the schedule is not up yet. It’s a mish mash of their usual programming with original, new programs in their ordinary time slots filled with a bunch of older material. Typically we aren’t seeing much in the way of new programming save for the premier of another large, computer generated monster mash up.

download (1)The CW always surprises me with their original programming. Sure they have the superhero nut cornered with some of the best DC adaptations around, but they also do quite a bit of dark fantasy programming. Stay tuned October 8th for the season premier of Vampire Diaries and The Originals. The CW also has IZombie which should be airing episodes Tuesday.

You won’t find much in the way of retro or marathon programming on this station, but keep your eye on them year round. They’re always the ones dropping pilot rumors for Horror TV shows whether they actually happen or not.

halloween-warsHalloween Wars will  be back again this October. It’s a weekly competition featured on The Food Network that feature food artists creating horrific things out of cake, candy and pumpkins all judged by a panel of experts and typically a Horror celeb. My family watches this every year and it’s a hoot. Vote for your favorite at home and argue with your family as they tell you which one they think deserves to win. Get inspired and make your own Halloween food/pumpkin creations. Typically Halloween Wars airs Sunday night.

From what I can tell from the Food Network site they’ve announced guest judges but the site isn’t exactly working properly. The thumbnail view shows… ELVIRA as a guest judge. This has to be the most exciting guest judge since Rob Zombie. We also have cast members from MTV’s Scream. The Walking Dead and The Strain joining as guest judges.

Halloween Wars Premieres October 4th at 9pm EST.

Here’s the show site as well.

imagesThe Travel Channel has some of the most unique, Halloween specific programs that feature actual decorating, haunts and destinations.  I’m always impressed with their lineup of shows that actually show off the Halloween season and not just Horror. Of course they have their own original programming that airs throughout the month of October including Ghost Adventures. Typically Friday and Saturday nights are dedicated to spooky shows in October, perfect for lounging around and finding something to do on your next autumn vacation.

Here are the highlights for the month of October:

tcm-logoThis is the best damn lineup we get each year during the month of October. There’s variety, themes, mini-marathons and toward the end of the month, full on Halloween horrorthon. This year TCM is working on a Friday night, featured subject or icon for it’s Horror. The last weekend of the month or so beings a rampant mad dash of exquisite Horror that is for genre lovers, newbies and perfect for nearly any audience looking to get their fright on. I thank TCM for upholding the highest standard in their programming even if I disagree with the Val Lewton night. Highlight for me? A few Hammer classics in there with Devil’s Bride and the first Friday in October features Haunted Houses with all of my absolute favorite horror films including a number in my top 10.
