The horror genre has a lot of interesting sub-genres and within those sub-genres a lot of equally interesting sub-categories: Nature Run-Amok would be a major horror sub-genre and within that sub-genre you’ve got a sub-category of flicks like killer rats, killer bears, killer pick-an-animal, big bug, regular-sized killer bugs movies, etc. However there are a few sub-genres that have no sub-categories because they’re either so specific, or no one has yet to create a movie to kick off that subcategory. For example the Killer Baby sub-genre, which is dominated by the classic It’s Alive trilogy, a lackluster It’s Alive remake and The Suckling, but I can’t think of any sub-categories for this one at all.

I was ready to put the alien rape sub-genre in that ‘no sub-categories’ category but then I remembered Galaxy Of Terror (1981). It’s not specifically about alien rape, but it does involve explorers on an alien world venturing into an alien pyramid that brings your fears to physical life. One of those fears for one of those explorers is maggots, so a maggot is enlarged to immense proportions and rapes this explorer to death. Unlike the three movies this series will cover the rape in Galaxy isn’t a catalyst that propels the rest of the movie’s events forward, it’s more of a by-product, which relegates Galaxy Of Terror into a sub-category of the alien rape sub-genre.

Sometimes when I think about it it’s very strange we even have an alien rape sub-genre, but then I recall all those books and docs I’ve read/seen throughout my life about people claiming to have been kidnapped by aliens and impregnated, so in the end I guess it shouldn’t be so strange that Hollywood picked up on this phenomena and ran with it, giving us several entertaining flicks: Inseminoid (1981), Xtro (1983), Breeders (1986), and to a lesser degree Breeders (1997, a remake? Possibly), and Progeny (1999). This 3-part review series will focus on the more audacious ones from the 80s. Though not in the order they were released, but in the order on the level of entertainment they provide. Breeders first, Xtro second and what I deem the mother of all alien rape movie, saving the best for last, Inseminoid!

I was able to trace coverage of Breeders to two Fangoria issues, #51 (left) and #60 (right). The latter is just a VHS review of the movie. The article in 51 is titled, “Killer Cyborgs And Alien Rapists Invade New York City,” it also covers Tim Kincaid’s Mutant Hunt movie which was filmed back to back with Breeders.

So let’s get this shindig started. I generally like to start off any review I’m doing, especially if it’s a memory movie from the good ol’ days, with an account of when I first saw it, but I’ve mentioned that memory of Breeders twice already in my reviews for The Being (1983) and Titan Find (1985, director’s cut), so I’ll just truncate it here and cut right to the chase. It was 1986 and that poster up there on the left beamed like a beacon on the wall of that video store me and Gerry (high school best friend) were in, attracting us like perverted moths to a flame. I mean, look at it, for a lover of B-movies, like we were, how can you not gaze at it and wonder if the movie was just as good?Hint—for those who are reading this and have never seen Breeders, no, it’s not what that poster blatantly shows, but I still found it to be a nice, juicy hunk of exploitive entertainment.

GAMBLE PACE & DALE ANDRIOTTI

In my TOXIC WASTE TERRORS series we visited The Big Apple two out of the three reviews, here we are yet again back in New York and back in the same era even, but this time instead of the city dealing with mutations brought on by toxic waste it’s dealing with an alien invasion and the two people on the front lines of this particular take over is a detective by the name of Dale Andriotti (Lance Lewman) and a doctor by the name of Gamble Pace (Teresa Farley).

There’s been a rash of strange rapes, five in all and all the victims end up at the same hospital and under the watchful eye of Dr. Pace. What these victims have in common is virginity, the main reason they were targeted, severe facial scarring caused by something acidic, partial memory blank and catatonia. The first victim was a hooker, the second was a model, the third was an ER nurse working with Pace and the fourth was a hair stylist working on the same model shoot as the model victim. The final victim ended up being the chick in charge of the model shoot.

Oh, and there’s one more crucial thing these rape victims have in common . . . the type of rapist they encountered.

ALIEN SHEDDING HIS MEAT SACK COVERING

Despite reports of them being unrelated individuals and one of them even a woman, all were aliens wearing human meat suits. They look like average, normal people, but then they go through a transformation where the skin bubbles, bursts, bleeds and falls off revealing a humanoid/insectile ET (possibly wearing a glorified and augmented slimy wet suit, proving, yes, a coat of slime on even the most earthly material can make it look creepy, alien and somewhat believable) who likes to plow their virgin victims and seriously rough them up in the process.

I have to say for a movie titled, Breeders, there ain’t a hell of a lot of breeding going on. A lot of raping, but not a lot of breeding. The only offspring we see is at the very end, after this crazy, old, bag lady is raped and killed. Her mutilated remains are found and then soon after we’re introduced to her human/alien offspring the invaders deemed a freak, the main reason they now choose to try and knock up virgins. They’re clean and untainted.

THE OFFSPRING

THE OFFSPRING

This homicidal offspring has a peculiar immunity to bullets but not to being bludgeoned by a two by four, stabbed by said two by four and then set on fire. So remember, virgins, if you’re in New York and getting assaulted by a dude who suddenly sheds his skin to become an alien don’t shoot the fucker, just beat the thing about the head severely, stab it or light it on fire. Of course that’s presuming the aliens have the same vulnerabilities as their bastard children, but, hey, what have you got to lose?

The cycle of these aliens are somewhat of a mystery. A last minute addition to the cast is pathologist Ira Markum (Ed French, the FX artist who created the aliens) who figures out where they’re hiding (underneath the city in an abandoned rail line) and then explains to Andriotti and Pace once they show up they came to earth as spores (ala Invasion Of The Body Snatchers), but from what we saw in the film prior and the subsequent mention from Ira of them being parasites we have to conclude the aliens “take over” a human and then when they’re ready to rape they burst out in that final gooey wet suit/humanoid/insectile form.

THE ALIEN BATHTUB

Another MO of the aliens is the ability to influence their victims. Eventually they’re discovered by an orderly to be totally healed of their facial wounds, with full make-up on too, in their hospital rooms. They then rise naked and hot looking in some kind of trance and begin a journey to the basement and into the underground where they all mysteriously gather in this for-lack-of-a-better-word “alien bathtub” full of what looks an awful lot like human cum. Here the girls act weird, lather each other up seductively with the cum, and then become hostile once Andriotti and Pace find them.

IRA’S (FX ARTIST ED FRENCH) FINAL FORM

The movie is short, 77-minutes short, and the acting ranges from all out bad to competent. It’s the blonde nurse who acts the best in my opinion. Yes, this movie falls into the bad B-movie category but if you’re used to watching these kind of flicks you get used to the bad acting and in most instances it becomes watchable so in all actuality your mind gets fooled into believing the bad acting is good acting. In conclusion this is a good bad movie with a lot of T&A with only the model showing hints of bush. The FX (gore and alien) are executed competently, even though you can sense a wet suit was involved but as I mentioned before with the added slime it didn’t bother me one bit. There’s only one alien ever seen throughout. I get the feeling with the accounts of the rapes there were more but budget limitations, I guess, only permitted one being shown in any given scene. The best transformation is Ira himself, his human head explodes and underneath is the alien.

This was initially released on DVD back in 2001 from MGM, and then it was added to a collection of movies (Supernova/Retroactive/Species: The Awakening) in 2011 from the same studio. The solo DVD is the one I own. I just wished MGM had put that eye-grabbing US poster as the cover art. The solo DVD is still in print but the collection is not; it can still be had (used) for a cheap price, however, on Amazon.

UPDATE: On October 27th Breeders finally gets a blu-ray release courtesy of Olive Films!

Video/Audio/Subtitles (DVD): 1.85:1 color (anamorphic)—English Dolby Digital Mono—French, Spanish subtitles only

Video/Audio/Subtitles (Blu-ray): 1.78:1 high definition widescreen—5.1 English DTS-HD Master Audio—No subtitles

UPDATE: Olive’s new blu-ray is a major improvement over any DVD currently on the market! Not only is the color and clarity improved, but despite the misprint on the back of the ratio being 1.85;1 Olive’s blu is more like 1.78:1 and I know this because in the scene where the blonde nurse strips after getting home from work something caught my eye this time. Her pubes! After the movie was over I popped in MGM’s solo DVD and you cannot spot her bush in that version at all, and it was obvious this new blu gives you a smidgen more picture on the top and bottom.

Keep watching the skies for my second one—XTRO!!
