Giant monsters are taking over the shelves this week, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s funny sometimes how these things correlate. Biggest movie in theaters? Dino-brawl. Subsequently, this week we have three titles featuring monsters beating up other monsters, including one with dinosaurs. Only one can be the spotlight though, and when the King of the Monsters is being sent to Hell, well there’s really not much of an argument, is there?
Godzilla in Hell begins this week, and comes to us from writer/artist James Stokoe. James is no stranger to Godzilla comics, he also wrote and did art for the excellent Godzilla: Half-Century War for IDW back in 2012. I was first exposed to his art in Orc Stain though, his creator owned title from Image Comics, in which good old One-Eye fought valiantly against the Orcish War Chief Orctzar. I’m not typically a fan of this type of fantasy, but checked it out on a recommendation, and trust me, it’s worth seeking out. For Godzilla in Hell, Stokoe will pit everyone’s favorite Monster against a different level of Hell in each issue. My expectations for this are pretty high.
Solicit from the IDW website:
Godzilla meets his greatest adversary of all time – the impossible tortures of Hell! Each issue of this special miniseries will see Godzilla enter a new level of the underworld to do battle with the impossible.
There is also one other book I wanted to highlight this week, although you’re going to have to do a little work to track down a copy. This week we FINALLY get the third issue of Escape From Jesus Island!!! If you aren’t familiar with EFJI, the short version reads like this: ReGen Corp is attempting to make a close of Jesus Christ. Their experiments are done on a remote island, and have produced an army of mutants. They’ve also managed to produce twins, their one success. Only the twins end up being both good and evil, with a clone of Christ and an Anti-Christ. The Vatican finds out about the experiments and sends in a spec ops unit to retrieve the twins. If the religious stuff doesn’t bother you, it’s seriously as badass as badassery comes in comic book form. The series is written by Shawn French, and features gorgeous art from Mortimer Glum.
The problem is, it’s kind of hard to find, and only comes out when the two are capable of finishing an issue and getting it printed. For instance, it’s been a year or so since I read issue #2 and we are just now getting #3. Still, it’s well worth the wait. For more info, and a look at a trailer for the series, visit JesusIsland.com. As for where you can get yourself copies of the first two issues, and a #3 you can buy directly from the official store here, or check and see if there’s a comic shop near you by using their retail store locator here. Issues 1 and 2 are also available on Amazon as of this writing.
Other notables this week include the aforementioned big monster goodness in Kaijumax #4 and Where Monsters Dwell #3. Also check out new issues of Re-Animator and The Strain, and Dark Horse has an interesting looking new title called Death Head out.
